In a lot of relationships, touch quietly gets recruited into a single job. It becomes the opening move, and only the opening move. Once that happens, the partner who is less often in the mood starts tensing at a hand on the back, because a hand on the back is now a question, and the partner who reached out learns to stop reaching. Both of you lose the ordinary, undramatic affection that made the relationship feel warm in the first place, and the sex does not get better either.
Sex therapy has had a tool for this since the 1960s. Sensate focus, developed by Masters and Johnson and still in standard use, works by removing the destination: partners take turns touching and being touched, attention on the sensation itself rather than on where it is heading, with intercourse off the table for a while. Goal-focused touch invites what Masters and Johnson called spectatoring — watching yourself perform instead of feeling what you actually feel — and taking the destination away brings the sensation back. You do not need a therapist to borrow the principle. Most of the work is done by saying it out loud. 'This isn't going anywhere', said warmly and at the start, changes what your partner's body has to brace for. The corollary matters just as much: if you do want it to go somewhere, say that too. Ambiguous touch leaves both of you guessing, and guessing is tiring.
It also helps to have real options in the category. A hand on the back of the neck while they are cooking. Feet in a lap through a film. A hug at the door that lasts long enough to be a hug rather than a pat. Scratching someone's head until they go quiet. Twenty minutes lying down together with both phones in another room. None of this is a lesser version of anything. For a lot of couples it is the part they miss most when it goes, and it is also, not coincidentally, the ground responsive desire grows out of.
Ask for five minutes of the touch you actually want, and be specific about it — 'my back, slowly, with your nails' beats 'a massage'. Say up front that it is not a preamble. Then swap. Either of you can stop at any point, and stopping is not a failure of anything.
